Carlos Sainz Australien 2023

F1: Sainz slammed with penalty for Norris clash

Sainz adjudged 'wholly to blame' for collision

McLaren driver handed five-second penalty, furious Sainz brands it 'unfair'

The FIA has explained why it labelled Carlos Sainz wholly to blame for his collision with Lando Norris at the Australian Grand Prix.

Sainz was handed a five-second penalty for the incident, which occurred on the opening lap of the race. The stewards deemed that Sainz was at fault for the collision, as he was deemed to have made a "late and ambitious" move on Norris.

Sainz was left furious by the penalty, branding it "unfair". He said: "I don't think it was a fair penalty. I was alongside Lando and I had the inside line. He turned in on me and I had nowhere to go."

The penalty dropped Sainz down to fifth place, behind Norris. The Spaniard was clearly disappointed with the result, but he vowed to come back stronger in the next race.

"I'm gutted with the result," said Sainz. "I felt like I had the pace to win today, but it wasn't meant to be. I'll learn from this and come back stronger in the next race."
